Overview

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Galle Fort today is brimming with culture. Colonial architecture meets Sri Lankan and South Asian traditions, and while it may be a relatively tiny place, the fort is home to a labyrinth of streets lined with boutiques and cafes. Galle Fort was originally built by the Portuguese in 1588 and later taken over by the Dutch in the 17th century. The Fort is filled with beautifully designed handicrafts which are almost impossible to find elsewhere in Sri Lanka. Visit historic points of interests, like ancient churches, mosques and museums, walk the Fort’s ramparts at sunset, and explore the cobblestone streets.

What To Expect

Madu River
Madu River, which flows across the Balapitiya area, is one of the most rarely visited and unspoiled attractions in Sri Lanka. This extraordinary estuary with a cluster of 64 small islands scattered along its impressive breadth, most of which are covered with mangroves and uninhabited, and is also a haven for crocodiles. The largest island is home to around 300 families, and the smallest barely an islet holds a tiny shrine with a statue built in respect of the Gods of Kataragama. There is also “Kurundu Doowa (Cinnamon Isle)” where a small family maintains a two acre cinnamon plantation, and the main attraction “Koth Doowa” (Island of the Pinnacle) which houses a serene Buddhist temple, all of which adds up to a truly remarkable and unforgettable boat ride.

Galle Fort
Galle Fort, or Dutch Fort as it is also known, is a fortification first built by the Portugese on the Southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. In the 18th century, the Dutch build their headquarters, Galle Fort, on the Sri Lankan coast. Nowadays, the old beautiful buildings are transformed into trendy shops, cafes, and restaurants. UNESCO named Galle Fort World Heritage, so the beauty of the building is being preserved. Even if you’re not a cultural person, the buildings inside Galle Fort will be something refreshing. The fort is a big monument itself and there are museums and beautiful churches within the fort’s walls.

Galle Fort Lighthouse
Although it dates back to 1848, the original light station was destroyed in 1934. In 1939, it was rebuilt with a height of 26.5 meters. The lighthouse compound is full of life throughout the day. In evenings when the sun sets, both locals and tourists flock to the Fort walls. The setting sun casts a golden glow over the Indian Ocean; one can witness the multiethnic and multicultural atmosphere in Sri Lanka’s southern capital. Start at the lighthouse and walk along the ramparts. Although it’s bustling with people, it’s easy to find a quiet spot for yourself to watch a majestic Sri Lankan sunset. You will also get a view of the Galle Fort from the top – its hipster cafes, cobblestone alleys, and terracotta roofs.

All Saints Anglican Church
Stilt fishermen rely on this method of fishing when they do not have access or the means for advanced fishing equipment for this technique requires only a stilt made with two wooden poles, where one long thin pole of 3 or 4 metres is tied to a wooden stick which is nailed into the sea bed in shallow waters of the ocean and the other pole is erected as a crossbar which functions as a seat for the fishermen to sit, perched on these vertical poles for several hours waiting to capture fish by using their fishing rods made out of Bamboo or kithul wood. Afterwards they store the catch in a bag tied to the pole or their waist.
