What To Expect

Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project

Stopt at : Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project operated by the Wild Life Protection Society of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1998 to protect Sri Lanka’s turtles from extinction. Since then it has released about 3.5 million baby turtles into the sea.
The hatchery pays fishermen for eggs that they collect at night along the long sandy beach. Although October to April is the main laying season, some eggs (mostly green turtles) can be found at Kosgoda throughout the year.
The hatchery buries the eggs in sand, and when they hatch around 50 days later the baby turtles are released into the sea at night. Only about one in 1,000 turtles survives to maturity. Kosgoda turtle hatchery also has tanks for injured or disabled turtles, including albino turtles that would not survive in the sea.

Madu River

Madu River is situated in Balapitiya and It opens to the Indian Ocean Madu lagoon is a very wide and a beautiful lagoon in Sri Lanka. It is in the wet zone of Sri Lanka with a high bio-diversity. Madu River has been proclaimed a Ramsa wetland in the world in 2004.
The bio-diversity of the Madu River is of monumental signification when considering the wide ranges of aquatic and avian life as well as wetland dwelling amphibians, reptiles, mammals that inhabit the environs of this natural treasure. A total of 11 species of agnatic mollusks and 14 land dwelling mollusks are found in this system. 70 species of fish, 31 types of reptiles, and 50 kinds of butterflies are just some of colorful array of wildlife that inhabits this abundantly bustling eco-system.
Many species of birds have been identified in the mangrove formed environs, spread of close to 61 hectares of the river.
Apart from the bountifully wondrous ecological treasures to be sighted, the river safari will also appeal on a level of historical and cultural experiences with visit to the numerous islets and atolls that are scattered along with the river. Around 25 such landmasses reported found in Madu river with some of these islets are home to local communities who have traditionally inhabited the lands as it populaces’ of witch some are engaged in the lucrative vocation of cinnamon peeling. The islet known as ‘Koth duwa’ is home to an ancient Buddhist temple.

Ariyapala Mask Museum

Traditional masks have played an important role in Sri Lankan culture and folklore for centuries. Used for both theatrical performances and rituals, these masks are carefully handcrafted by skilled craftsmen who have learnt the art from their forefathers. The Ariyapala Mask Museum in Ambalangoda is an excellent way of learning and understanding mask making that is unique to Sri Lanka. The museum has a workshop and library which is specifically designed to introduce the richness of the mask tradition of Ambalangoda.

Galle Fort

Stop at Galle Fort : Galle- said to be the famous Tarshish of the Bible where King Solomon obtained gems and spices, this ‘living’ UNESCO World Heritage Site is the port where the Portuguese first landed in Sri Lanka in 1505. Captured and fortified by Dutch who ruled maritime Sri Lanka in the 17th and 18th centuries, the city still remains the air of Old Holland.
The Galle Fort, also known as the Dutch Fort or the "Ramparts of Galle", said to be the famous Tarshish of the Bible where King Solomon obtained gems and spices, this site is the port where the Portuguese first landed in Sri Lanka in 1505. Within the well-preserved 90 acre fort and majority of the ramparts built in 1663 are old Dutch churches and monuments with armorial bearings, an imposing crested and monogrammed gateway dated 1669, many well preserved old Dutch houses and narrow alleys still bearing Dutch names.
